Reader in Critical and Cultural Theory

About

I teach and research on various aspects of critical and cultural theory and media culture. I have a particular interest in visual culture and more specifically image studies. I am the author of ‘Image Critique’ (Intellect, 2008) and co-editor of ‘Images: A Reader’ (Sage, 2006), an anthology of writings on the image from Plato to the present.

WORK-IN-PROGRESS...

* Image Studies: (1) As a companion to the Reader, I am currently working on a textbook, ‘Image Studies: A Practical Approach’ (to be published by Routledge, due 2012). (2) I am also preparing a 4 volume set, 'Images: Critical & Primary Sources (4 Vol.)', for Berg (Due 2012). And, (3) working on a lecture and article: 'Regarding Images Studies: Towards a New Ecology of Images'.

* The Neutral – as a developing, long-term area of research I am examining the concept of the ‘neutral’ as it appears in Roland Barthes’ late writings (in conjunction also with the writings of Blanchot, Bataille, Kristeva and Cixous among others). I am exploring the concept with respect to social, cultural, and political discourses, but with particular attention to theoretical debates within semiotics and aesthetics. My starting point, as a direct extension of previous work, has been the relationship between neutrality and the image. I am currently preparing a paper on the work of the Japanese photographer Shōmei Tōmatsu.

* Situations of Writing is a collection of essays I am currently preparing for book publication. The essays cover a range of topics, but each touch upon questions regarding the writing of critical theory, the status of 'virtual scholars', and the significance of new media. The book aims to reflect non-traditional forms of academic/critical writing and consider the art of 'moving theory' - making theory not only engage critically with the material world, but also to touch us, to be both affirmative and affecting.
