Thesis Title: The Linguistic Subject of William Carlos Williams' "Spring and All"

About

While my research activities encompass many areas of post-1900 literature and literary theory, my doctoral thesis focuses on William Carlos Williams’ conception of what I call linguistic subjectivity in 'Spring and All', reading the prose of that book as a manifesto of American High Modernism. I'm currently adapting this project for a wider study of Williams' early 'manifestos'. I've also recently undertaken related research on James Joyce and T.S. Eliot, focusing on historical, psychoanalytic, and 'confessional' contexts.

I am also near finishing a longer manuscript for a poetry collection originally submitted as part of my doctorate, which explores language and subjectivity in relation to the body, memory, desire, and especially the complex role of gender and sexuality in contemporary lyric poetry. Some of these poems have been published in chapbooks: 'Orchids' (Salt, 2010), 'Orchestra & Chorus' (Holdfire, 2012), and an illustrated sequence, 'Waterloo' (Like This, 2012).

Previously, I studied for an MA in Creative Writing (Poetry) at Royal Holloway, University of London, under Andrew Motion, and an MA in Feature Film Screenwriting, at Royal Holloway as well. My bachelor's degree, from Berklee College of Music, is in Songwriting.
